Dandelion Soup

first year

Garden archive: 2nd October 2019

Forage from the wild-but-productive bits of the garden. Bramble, yarrow, broadleaf plantain, ribwort plantain, dandelion, young dock, dead nettle, rose petals. I had plans to do some plain batches of a few last bits after this, but then I had the idea to update this website and so ran out of available time/ energy.

Further to my mixed foraging, today I harvested the young nettle for the same. Nettles take ages to harvest and prep by hand, but they’re very nutritious so it’s usually worth the effort.

Foraging corner and that which has been dried (dehydrated) so far. The aim is that this food will feed my guinea pigs over the winter when their diet is otherwise very monotonous; buying in similar is very expensive. I’m sure my neighbours all think that this is the messiest and worst corner of my […]Read Post ›

Anyone for some giant watercress? It was a super hot day, so I took advantage of this and spent the afternoon barefoot in the beck, clearing it out. Unfortunately I forgot to take a before photo. Well, “forgot”. I had just headed down the garden with the dog to hang out, with no prior plans […]Read Post ›

First grass mowing of the year! Keeping the top short, and putting paths in lower down. Plan is to just let the rest of it grow out and see what species are already present if allowed to develop.

Various angles of the beck   The beck flows through most of the village before coming to me, then on to my next-door neighbour, and out the far end of the village. Just upstream of my garden is the village green which was created, and the beck partially culverted, in the mid 70s. The culvert […]Read Post ›

I was really taking photos of my neighbour’s escaped chicken that was living in my garden, but shows the middle bit and the weird-bush-by-the-beck area quite well.

My first experience of the beck flooding. Photo taken to get an idea of how far the water extends re. plant habitat boundaries

Garden Archive: winter 2017/18

Photos from before I lived here, when perfect lawn was order of the day. The previous people who lived here had visiting grandkids, and the people before them were an older couple who had lived here since the house was originally built. There’s a lot of mature trees (will have been planted in the 70s/80s/90s […]Read Post ›
